Vita

Benjamin Haas, born in 1984, has been a Research Associate at the Professorship of Social Policy and Qualitative Social Research Methods since January 2016. In his PhD project he researches the financial lives of taxi drivers in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, with a special focus on debt relationships.

After graduating in Regional Studies of Latin America (B.A.) at the University of Cologne, he was responsible for the evaluation and quality assurance of the German weltwärts initiative – a volunteering for development program – from 2011 to 2013 at Engagement Global gGmbH in Bonn. From 2013 to 2015, he studied Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (M.A.) at the University of Leiden (NL) and the University College London with a focus on economic anthropology. He has carried out several study and research trips to Argentina, Ghana, Nicaragua and Trinidad & Tobago.

Benjamin continues to provide freelance consultation to various governmental and non-governmental organisations in the field of international development. He also works as a trainer in the areas of international cooperation, volunteering and global citizenship education.

Research Interest

In his research Benjamin focuses on social, cultural and moral dimensions of private debt, with a special emphasis on the global South. With an anthropological approach he investigates how people use and deal with financial products from banks, credit cooperatives, microfinance institutions, as well as with consumer loans. His research is embedded in the examination of wider theoretical concepts such culture, religion, life plans, contingencies, networks, future aspirations, neoliberalism and development. He applies his research questions to the exemplary group of taxi drivers and the public transport system in the global South in general. His regional focuses are the La Plata region, Central America and West Africa.

Benjamin’s secondary research topic is the special forms of civic engagement, particularly (international) voluntary services and volunteering programs. In conjunction with this research and teaching, Benjamin deals with topics such as postcolonial theory, development theories and policy, global learning, global citizenship education, inclusion, third sector, cooperation of the state and civil society, the principles of subsidiarity, solidarity, welfare and charity.
